Editorial Standards
Purpose of the catalogue
The OUHNA Public Domain Literature Library exists to make high-quality public-domain texts accessible to modern readers with contextual editorial notes. The catalogue prioritizes works that reward close reading and offer historical or literary interest, presented without commercial intent.
Scope and selection
All 98 titles are drawn from the Project Gutenberg corpus, with a focus on English-language fiction and nonfiction from the 18th to early 20th centuries. Selection is based on literary merit, historical significance, and diversity of voice and setting. No work is included for promotional or algorithmic reasons.
Source attribution
Every book page explicitly credits Project Gutenberg as the source of the electronic text. The catalogue notes are independent editorial work and do not claim to represent the views of Project Gutenberg or any other organization.
Bibliographic records
Each record includes title, author(s), illustrator(s) when noted, publisher (always Project Gutenberg), subject keywords, target reader, and a unique catalogue note. The keywords are taken directly from Project Gutenberg metadata and may not cover every theme in the work.
Category assignment
Books are grouped into four categories based on thematic and subject affinities. These categories are editorial tools, not fixed classifications. A single book might fit multiple categories; the chosen category reflects the most prominent focus in the available excerpts and catalogue note.
Editorial reading context
Catalogue notes are written after reading the full text of each work, but they do not claim to be exhaustive. They highlight narrative techniques, recurring images, and relationships between works. Notes avoid plot spoilers beyond what is necessary to describe the opening or central tension.
Edition facts and text measurements
All texts are based on the Project Gutenberg editions, which are transcribed from printed editions now in the public domain. No alterations have been made to the original text. Page counts and Where source text can be measured reliably, word count and estimated reading time may be provided as reading-scope information.
Recommendations and related works
Recommended books within each category are chosen to represent different authors, settings, and styles. Recommendations are based on the catalogue note and the editorial reading; they are not meant as definitive rankings.
Corrections and reader reports
Readers may report errors or suggestions via the contact page. The catalogue is maintained by OUHNA Catalogue, Bibliographic Consultant. Corrections are reviewed and implemented as appropriate.
Public-domain limitations
All works in this catalogue are confirmed to be in the public domain in the United States. Readers outside the U.S. should verify the copyright status in their jurisdiction. The catalogue does not guarantee copyright clearance for any particular use.
Accessibility and readable presentation
The catalogue uses semantic HTML with plain styling. Text is presented in a responsive layout. No external scripts, images, or tables are used. Internal navigation links are limited to the site’s own URLs.
Independence and editorial responsibility
The catalogue is independently edited. OUHNA Catalogue is responsible for all editorial content. No external funding, advertising, or partnerships influence the selection or content of the catalogue.
What the catalogue does not claim
The catalogue does not claim peer review, professional librarian credentials, or legal certification. It does not assert that every book has been read in full by the catalogue project (though that is the practice). Supplementary catalogue material may use automated assistance during drafting or revision and should not be treated as authoritative scholarship. It is not affiliated with any university or institution.
Ongoing maintenance
The catalogue is updated periodically as new public-domain works become available or as editorial notes are refined. The goal is to maintain a stable, reliable resource for readers of classic literature.
